What should be done if a rotary vane vacuum pump malfunction?

The rotary vane vacuum pump occasionally malfunctions generally caused by improper operation. First, we need to figure out where the problem is and then propose corresponding solutions. Common faults include oil leakage, loud noise, crash, overheating, overload, and failure to meet limit pressure standards, etc. I will share with you the solutions of first four faults here.

Oil leakage. It occurs at any connection, so it is difficult to prevent it. If you find that the vacuum pump is leaking oil, first stop the operation, and close the gas control valve. Then, we need to find out where the oil leak is, and replace the corresponding component. We including the one between vacuum pump and the filter So we need to choose filters with better sealing performance. As a filter manufacturer, we have heard a similar issue but that’s oil leakage of filter. That could be because the connection between the filter and the vacuum pump is not tightened properly. However, it is also possible that the sealing of the filter is bad, so it is necessary to choose a filter with excellent quality.

Loud noise. If the noise of the rotary vane pump suddenly increases beyond the normal operating sound, it indicates that there is a problem with the vacuum pump. It may be caused by damaged part like motor bearings. We need to notice three parts particularly that seals, O-rings, and rotating blades, which are easily damaged.

Crash. Blindly starting the vacuum pump without knowing the cause of the malfunction may lead to worse results. Thus, turn off the power firstly. Then open the pump and check if the rotors can be rotated. If not, it may be stuck by some objects, or caused by high viscosity of pump oil, or affected by low starting temperature. If the rotors can be rotated, it may be caused by a coupling or motor malfunction.

Overheating. If the pump temperature is too high, it will increase the pump pressure and decrease the pumping efficiency. If the temperature is not too high on site, it is likely caused by a malfunction of the motor fan. The temperature of the vacuum pump should be kept at an appropriate value. As mentioned earlier, a low pump temperature is not good either. A low pump temperature will increase the viscosity of the pump oil, making it impossible for the rotor to function properly.

Last but not least, remember to take protective measures and clean the pump properly if the working condition is corrosive or toxic. After repair, we also need to regularly maintain the vacuum pump, especially replace the pump oil and filters.
